St. Louis City MOVANS Coverage
Missouri's piece of VINE goes by MOVANS. VINELink itself is the search entry point. Local-jail registration happens at the Missouri MOVANS portal. Older Missouri VINE guidance names the St. Louis City Justice Center as a reporting agency for the program. Current DPS materials skip a county-by-county participation table. Coverage is best stated with care. The Justice Center has a documented reporting history and sits inside Missouri's local-jail system, but the live feed is the real test at search time. Any local jail can go offline. MOVANS also sends alerts for Missouri Department of Corrections offenders and court events, each through its own separate text or email registration.
Match the channel to the person's stage. Someone still moving through SLMPD processing may not have reached the local-jail feed yet. A Justice Center inmate is a local custody search, while a person sentenced to state prison moves the search to the MODOC channel. Federal custody leaves MOVANS entirely. The official VINELink site is where a named-person custody search starts.
The neutral interface routes a search without displaying a gallery of booking photographs.
How to Run a St. Louis VINELink Check
Search for one person at a time. Use every identity field the live form offers, since common names return multiple matches and one spelling slip can hide the record you need.
- Open VINELink and select Missouri when the interface asks for a state.
- Choose the relevant local-jail or custody search shown by the current form.
- Enter the person’s name or offender identifier. Add available identity details to narrow multiple matches.
- Compare age or date-of-birth information, custody status, agency, and reporting agency before selecting a record.
- Open the matching record and note when it was checked because custody details can change.
- Confirm a questionable result with the City Justice Center locator or the agency holding the person.
MOVANS does not answer every question. The St. Louis City recent-arrests guide covers the CJC locator, record requests, and court follow-up.
What a MOVANS Custody Result Shows
These fields come from the historic Missouri guide. They show the general shape of a result, not a promise that every St. Louis City search will display each item.
| Field | Use and limit |
|---|---|
| Name | Primary match field; confirm it with another identifier. |
| Date of birth or age | Helps distinguish people who share a name. |
| Custody status | Shows the reported state at the time of the feed, subject to lag. |
| Agency or reason | Provides context for the reported custody event. |
| Reporting agency | Identifies the source feeding the result and helps route verification. |
| Photo availability | Older guidance mentioned a possible photo indicator, but no current City photo is promised. |
A custody alert is an event notice. It says something happened, not why. A release alert never means the charges were dismissed, and a transfer alert does not equal a sentence. Read the custody change beside the court record. Contact the reporting agency when an event needs confirmation. For facility details, case numbers, and case outcomes, the City's own locator and the court systems are the better sources.
Treat each piece for what it is. A booking event and a court docket answer different questions, so a full picture takes both.
Register for St. Louis Custody Alerts
Missouri DPS changed the local-jail system on May 5, 2026. Its May 6 notice is blunt. Prior local-jail users must re-register at the MOVANS portal. Telephone calls and the VINELink app no longer work for local jail notifications, so current users should choose SMS or email.
- Go to the current MOVANS portal after identifying the correct person or local custody record.
- Choose the available local-jail registration option.
- Select SMS or email as the delivery channel.
- Enter and confirm the requested contact details through the live process.
- Keep registration information private and update it if the contact channel changes.
- Re-register if the account or alert existed before the May 2026 local-jail system update.
Older MOVANS materials described phone registration with a PIN. Those phone steps are history now. Following them as current guidance would leave a St. Louis alert unregistered. DOC offender and court-event registration by text or email continues separately.
Rules can change again. Use the delivery choices the portal shows. Do not give a phone number expecting a voice call, and do not count on the VINELink app for a St. Louis local-jail alert; SMS and email are the stated channels. The Missouri DPS May 2026 notice documents the change and the re-registration rule.
Skip the old phone and app directions. The Missouri MOVANS portal is the destination for local-jail registration under the current notice.
The portal is used for current registration after the statewide system update.
VINELink Limits for St. Louis Arrests
MOVANS is not a universal arrest search. A person can vanish from results for many reasons. The local jail feed may be offline, processing may be incomplete, or the name and identifier may simply not match. Custody could sit with a nonparticipating agency. The person may have been released or transferred, or the record may be protected. A blank result proves nothing.
Federal custody sits outside MOVANS completely. The Bureau of Prisons, ICE, and the U.S. Marshals Service each run separate systems. Someone in SLMPD custody can also be too early in the process to show up through the Justice Center feed.
The local CJC search has its own gaps. It demands exact first and last names, splits results into Active Inmates and Released in past 72 hours, and updates only periodically. Checking both limited systems beats treating either one as complete.
When the St. Louis MOVANS Feed Is Offline
Start with the DPS warning itself. A blank result can simply mean the St. Louis City jail feed is offline. The state offers no promise that the MOVANS connection runs without interruption. There is no fixed public participation table to lean on either. So retry the search with exact spelling first. Do not assume anything yet. Then try the CJC Active Inmates list and its Released in past 72 hours companion. A very fresh arrest may still be sitting at Prisoner Processing instead of the jail. For a system failure, Missouri DPS takes reports at movans@dps.mo.gov and 573-526-1929.
One source may show the person and another may not. Figure out which agency holds that particular stage of the case. CJC answers local jail custody. SLMPD handles police processing. MODOC covers state prison. The court of record is the place that confirms the filed case. MOVANS support can fix notification glitches, but it cannot stand in for the originating record.
Note: Save the time and source of each check so later custody changes are not confused with an earlier outage.
Apps Not Affiliated With MOVANS
The state notice is blunt about apps. MobilePatrol and Missouri Sheriff Connect have no affiliation with Missouri MOVANS, and the City Justice Center publishes no official jail app for its roster or booking photographs. A name or photo inside a third-party app means little by itself. Go through the official state and City routes instead. Social posts and app entries can vanish, confuse St. Louis City with St. Louis County, or lag behind a transfer. Before trusting any alert, confirm the source agency, the reporting time, and the jurisdiction.
Custody alerts also answer a narrower question than a City booking record. MOVANS tells you a person is held, moved, or released. The CJC locator can add the facility, arrest time, charge, case number, and next court date when those fields appear. Missouri Case.net or Municipal Court carries the story after that. Treat no single system as the whole record.
Shared names cause real trouble. Never register from a name alone. Compare the age or date-of-birth detail, the reporting agency, and the custody location. If the match stays cloudy, call the reporting agency before attaching an alert. That step also keeps St. Louis City separate from the St. Louis County system.
Privacy deserves a thought too. Guard the email address or mobile number tied to your alerts, and finish the portal's confirmation steps. An alert can land late because the agency, the state system, and the delivery provider each play a part. For an urgent safety or custody question, phone the responsible agency rather than waiting on a message.
MOVANS does not keep a complete City booking history. Once a person leaves the tracked custody status, the durable sources are the Corrections booking record, the SLMPD report, and the court docket. A focused City Sunshine request can ask for the arrest date, intake and release details, charges as recorded, and the identifying number the custodian uses, subject to lawful closure or redaction.
